It started with old Henderson, who’d just lost his farm.
“Don’t you worry,” he told his wife. “Big things are coming. It can only good happen.”
He’d seen a man on TV in a red tie say it. And he repeated it with such unshakable confidence, his wife stopped crying.
His neighbour, Janice, was next. Her son had failed a test.
“School is wrong”, she smiled. “It can only good happen.”
The boy didn’t bother studying again.
And they were not alone. Others had seen red tie man on TV.
Smart people knew it only good can happen.
Of course bad still happen to stupid people. But why should good people care?
Your bad car destroyed in pothole? So what? Not my good car.
But soon a not good happen to everyone.
A big river flooded, and water do much bad.
Man in red tie say flood “a tremendous waterfront expansion. The best expansion in the world. Ever. Everyone say so.”
Good people cheer.
He went on, “bad flooding happen because some people think it can only bad happen.”
Good people jeer.
Only bad people say it can only good not happen.
Doctors who say bad happen go away first.
Then teacher who learned children about bad.
But some monster still not listen.
Why they not see it can only good happen!?
Then some bad shops complain about good tariff, so windows smash.
Stock market show single number: GOOD.
Economy fixed.
Lawyer disappear when say good man is bad.
“Freedom speech!” shout as she not-alived.
Law fixed.
Media who say bad shush next.
All fix.
Red tie much happy.
People free now. As long good.
And the towns became festering piles of shit.
Paint peel. Bridge rust. Shelfs empty. Children cough.
But OK. Still smile.
It can only good happen.
